South Asian Chinese Language Teachers Program

Brochure of Professional Development Program for Chinese Language Teachers in South Asian Countries—Confucius Institute Scholarship (2017)

Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban (hereinafter referred to as “Hanban”) launches the “Confucius Institute Scholarship: Professional Development Program for Chinese Language Teachers in South Asian Countries” to expand the cultural and educational exchanges between China and South Asian countries and to improve the localization of Chinese language teachers in South Asian countries.

I. Eligibility

Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens from South Asia and be in good health.

II. Category of Scholarship

A. One-Academic-Year of Chinese language learning + Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(BTCSOL)(1+4)

Eligibility: Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens, aged below 25, with a high school certificate or above. Applicants have to sign agreements with Hanban.
Admission time: Autumn semester in 2017
Scholarship duration: 5 academic years
Scholarship: Scholarship recipients are exempt from tuition, accommodation fees and are provided with monthly living allowance of CNY 2,500 per month. A roundtrip flight of economic class shall be provided every academic year for foreign students studying in China, covering the shortest distance between the residing place of the scholarship recipient’s home country and the Chinese host university where he/she is studying.

B. Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(BTCSOL) (4 school years)

Eligibility: Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens, aged below 25, with a high school certificate or above and score no less than 180 in HSK (level 3) and 60 scores in HSKK (intermediate level). Applicants have to sign agreements with Hanban.
Admission time: Autumn semester in 2017
Scholarship duration:4 academic years
Scholarship: Scholarship recipients are exempt from tuition, accommodation fees and are provided with monthly living allowance of CNY 2,500 per month. C. Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) Students

Eligibility:Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens, aged below 35, with a master’s degree or above, and score no less than 180 in HSK (level 5) and 60 scores in HSKK (intermediate level). Applicants have to sign agreements with Hanban. Applicant who is able to provide the employment agreement or certification upon finishing the study from designated working institutions is preferred.
Admission time: Autumn semester in 2017
Scholarship duration: 2 academic years
Scholarship: Scholarship recipients are exempt from tuition, accommodation fees and are provided with monthly living allowance of CNY3, 000 per month. Around trip flight of economic class shall be provided every academic year for foreign students studying in China, covering the shortest distance between the residing place of the scholarship recipient’s home country and the Chinese host university where he/she is studying.

D. One-Academic-Year Language Study

Eligibility:Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens, and should have no prior experience of studying in China. Applicants shall be Chinese and related majors. And the score no less than 180 in HSK (level 3) and 60 scores in HSKK (Beginner level).
Admission time: Autumn semester in 2017
Scholarship duration:11 months
Scholarship: Scholarship recipients are exempt from tuition, accommodation fees and are provided with monthly living allowance of CNY2,500 per month.

E. One-Semester Language Study

Eligibility:Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens, and should have no prior experience of studying in China. Applicants shall be Chinese and related majors. And the score no less than 120 in HSK (level 2) and 60 scores in HSKK (Beginner level).
Admission time: Autumn semester in 2017/ Spring semester in 2018
Scholarship duration: 5 months
Scholarship: Scholarship recipients are exempt from tuition, accommodation fees and are provided with monthly living allowance of CNY2, 500 per month.

III. Recruitment Procedures

1. Applicants should read through this brochure and prepare application documents according to Section IV.

2. Please log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarship website at http://cis.chinese.cn, sign up an individual account, complete and submit the Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form online, and upload the scanned copies of relevant supporting documents.

3. Please log on to the application system for foreign students of BNU(http://apply.bnu.edu.cn/ ) and establish a personal account. Complete and submit the entrance application form online. Print the BNU Application Form for International Students. Applicants and guarantee should sign on the application form.

4. Please finish the online application before May 31, 2017. All application documents should be mailed to International Students Office of BNU.

IV. Application Documents

1Photocopy of passport photo page.

2HSK and HSKK score reports (not required for “1+4” program applicants).

3.Highest education diploma attained and transcripts during the school years (original or notarized copy in Chinese or English).
Applicants for undergraduate program should provide: transcript in senior high school, and senior high school graduation certificate. [Notes: The present year’s graduates should provide original copy of scheduled graduation proof, and resubmit the photo copy of senior high school graduation certificate (show the original copy as well) after being admitted. The resubmission must be finished before the registration date.]

41 reference letter signed and issued by President of recommendation institutes (in Chinese or English).

5MTCSOL are required to provide 2 reference letters from professors (no fixed format required)

6BNU Application Form for International Students (please stick one recent bareheaded ID photo on the form)

8Applicants under the age of 18 shall submit relevant legal documents of entrusted legal guardians in China.

9Application fees: ¥450 for language study, ¥500 for undergraduate;¥600 for Ph. D students, should be paid online by the personal application account on BNU application website for international students.

*Application documents and application fees will not be returned.

V. Admission

1. Accordingto Brochure of Professional Development Program for Chinese Language Teacher sin South Asian Countries—Confucius Institute Scholarship of BNU, best candidate will be admitted and the proposed name list of qualified candidates on the scholarship will be submitted to Hanban. Hanban will review and decide successful applicants on the Scholarship.

2. International Students Office of BNU will mail Admission Letter and Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Study in China (JW202 Form) to successful applicants.

VI. Points for Attention

1. If application document is incomplete or applicant not qualified, the application will be invalid.

2.If the application documents are not authentic, or not completed and submitted by the applicant, once verified, the application will be invalid.

3.If the scholarship recipient cannot register at the host university in time for certain reasons, he/she shall inform the host university 15 days prior to the registration day with a written explanation. For those who cannot complete registration without any reason, the scholarship will be canceled.

4.Scholarships will be canceled for those who cannot pass the health examination.

5.Scholarship recipient should attend annual assessment of the host university after admission. Only those who pass the assessment can proceed their study with the scholarship next year.
