South Asian Chinese Language Teachers Program

Brochure of Professional Development Program for Chinese Language Teachers in South Asian Countries—Confucius Institute Scholarship (2016)

Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban (hereinafter referred to as “Hanban”) launches the “Confucius Institute Scholarship: Professional Development Program for Chinese Language Teachers in South Asian Countries” to expand the cultural and educational exchanges between China and South Asian countries and to improve the localization of Chinese language teachers in South Asian countries.

I. Eligibility

Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens from South Asia and be in good health. Preference will be given to South Asian students studying in China or winners of the “Chinese Bridge” Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and High School Students.

II. Category of Scholarship

A. One-Academic-Year of Chinese language learning + Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other LanguagesBTCSOL(1+4 school years)

Eligibility: Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens, aged below 30, with a high school certificate or above. Applicants have to sign agreements with Hanban.

Admission time: Autumn semester in 2016
Scholarship duration: 5 academic years

Scholarship: Scholarship recipients are exempt from tuition, accommodation fees and are provided with monthly living allowance of CNY 2,500 per month. A roundtrip flight of economic class shall be provided every academic year for foreign students studying in China, covering the shortest distance between the residing place of the scholarship recipient’s home country and the Chinese host university where he/she is studying. Hanban will support the graduates to teach Chinese in their home countries for five years, during which their salary shall be paid by Hanban.

B. Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages BTCSOL (4 school years)

Eligibility: Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens, aged below 30, with a high school certificate or above and score no less than 180 in HSK (level 3) and 40 scores in HSKK (intermediate level). Applicants have to sign agreements with Hanban.

Admission time: Autumn semester in 2016
Scholarship duration: 4 academic years

Scholarship: Scholarship recipients are exempt from tuition, accommodation fees and are provided with monthly living allowance of CNY 2,500 per month. A roundtrip flight of economic class shall be provided every academic year for foreign students studying in China, covering the shortest distance between the residing place of the scholarship recipient’s home country and the Chinese host university where he/she is studying. Hanban will support the graduates to teach Chinese in their home countries for five years, during which their salary shall be paid by Hanban.

C. Scholarship for Doctoral Degree in Chinese Literature, History, Philosophy and other majors.

Eligibility: Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens, aged below 45, with a master’s degree or above, and score no less than 180 in HSK (level 5) and 60 scores in HSKK (advanced level). Applicants have to sign agreements with Hanban.

Admission time: Autumn semester in 2016
Scholarship duration: 3 to 4 academic years in general

Scholarship: Scholarship recipients are provided with CNY 80,000 per year as living allowance and accommodation fees, and CNY 20,000 per year as investigation fees for research. Scholarship recipients are also provided with international travel expenses to and from host university, tuition fees, training expenses for Chinese host university, medical and accident insurance for foreign students when studying in China, group activities and cultural experience. Hanban will support the graduates to teach Chinese in their home countries for five years, during which their salary shall be paid by Hanban.

III. Recruitment Procedures

1. Applicants should read through this brochure and prepare application documents according to Section IV.

2. Please log on to the application system for foreign students of BNU (http://apply.bnu.edu.cn/) and establish a personal account. Complete and submit the entrance application form online. Print the BNU Application Form for International Students. Applicants and guarantee should sign on the application form.

3. Please finish the online application before May 31, 2016. All application documents should be mailed to International Students Office of BNU.

IV. Application Documents

1Photocopy of passport photo page.

2HSK and HSKK score reports (not required for “1+4” program applicants).

3Highest education diploma attained and transcripts during the school years(original or notarized copy in Chinese or English).

    Applicants for undergraduate program should provide: transcript in senior high school, and senior high school graduation certificate.[ Notes: The present year’s graduates should provide original copy of scheduled graduation proof, and resubmit the photocopy of senior high school graduation certificate(show the original copy as well) after being admitted. The resubmission must be finished before the registration date.]

    Applications for doctor program should provide: notarized transcripts of undergraduate and postgraduate study and diplomas of bachelor and master degree, and the according Chinese versions.

41 reference letter signed and issued by President of recommendation institutes(in Chinese or English).

52 reference letters from experts (from 2 course teachers or experts, no fixed format required)

9Abstract of postgraduate thesis and other research products; and Research plan for Ph.D program (only required for doctoral program applicants)

10Applicants under the age of 18 shall submit relevant legal documents of entrusted legal guardians in China.

11Application fees: 500 for undergraduate; 600 for Ph.D students, should be paid online by the personal application account on BNU application website for international students.

*Application documents and application fees will not be returned.

V. Admission

1. According to Brochure of Professional Development Program for Chinese Language Teachers in South Asian CountriesConfucius Institute Scholarship (2016) of BNU, best candidate will be admitted and the proposed name list of qualified candidates on the scholarship will be submitted to Hanban. Hanban will review and decide successful applicants on the Scholarship,

2. International Students Office of BNU will mail Admission Letter and Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Study in China (JW202 Form) to successful applicants.

VI. Points for Attention

1. If application document is incomplete or applicant not qualified, the application will be invalid.

2. If the application documents are not authentic, or not completed and submitted by the applicant, once verified, the application will be invalid.

3. If the scholarship recipient cannot register at the host university in time for certain reasons, he/she shall inform the host university 15 days prior to the registration day with a written explanation. For those who cannot complete registration without any reason, the scholarship will be canceled.

4. Scholarships will be canceled for those who cannot pass the health examination.

5. Scholarship recipient should attend annual assessment of the host university after admission. Only those who pass the assessment can proceed their study with the scholarship next year.
