    Beijing Normal University (BNU) is a comprehensive research university that is directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education of China, with a long history and profound cultural heritage. Beijing Normal University ranks among the top universities in China in terms of its comprehensive strength. It is a key university in the Chinese “Project 985” and “Project 211” and is one of the first “Double First-Class” A-class universities in China. With its rich educational resources, the university is an important base for the cultivation of high quality and innovative talents in China. In 2021, BNU continues its global admission of international undergraduate students to study in China for Bachelor’s degree.

    I. Majors and Programs

    There are 37 majors in 7 fields available for international undergraduate students. The university plans to recruit the best applicants from around the world on merit.

    The duration for Bachelor’s degree program is 4 years, and the language of instruction is Chinese. Students who meet the requirements for graduation of their major with the prescribed time limit shall be issued the bachelor’s degree graduation certificate of Beijing Normal University; Students who meet the relevant requirements on degree awarding of Beijing Normal University shall be issued the bachelor’s degree certificate for undergraduate students of ordinary higher education. 

    II. Admission Eligibility and Qualifications

    1. Applicants should be in good health and of good character, respect Chinese habits and customs and be willing to abide by both Chinese Law & Regulations as well as the university’s Rules & Regulations.

    2. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and less than 40, have a valid foreign passport and non-Chinese citizenship. Applicants under the age of 18 as of September 1, 2021 must have a guardian in China. 

    3. If both parents or one of the parents of the applicant are Chinese citizens and reside in a foreign country, the applicant should have foreign nationality at birth and hold a valid foreign passport or nationality certificate for at least 4 years. In addition, more than 2 years of actual residence in a foreign country has been recorded in the last 4 years (ending in April 30, 2021). The actual residence of more than 9 months in a year can be counted as one year, subject to the entry and exit signatures. For residences of mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan who immigrated to foreign countries and are applying as international students, please refer to the requirements above. 

    4. Applicant’s language proficiency must meet the requirements for the relevant major. Applicants for Chinese language major and Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages major must reach a score above 180 in HSK 4; those of other majors must reach a score of above 180 in HSK 5. 

    5. Applicants who meet either of the following conditions can apply for exemption from written examination. The qualification will be determined by the school on merit basis.

    SAT

    Total score above 1300 points in SAT I;

    At least 3 SAT II subjects, with a score of 400 points of each subject or above;

    IB

    IB certification obtained, with results of at least three HL subjects. Total score of 32 or above.

    A-Level

    At least three A-Level subjects. A minimum of C or above in each subject.

    ACT

    A minimum total score of 25 or above in ACT.

    Korean CSAT

    The addition of the grades from 3 main subjects should be less or equal to 15.

    Japanese Center Test

    A minimum total score of 560 points or above (The full score on the test is 900 points); A minimum total score of 185 points or above (The full score of the test is 300 points); Other test methods should be carried out according to the ratio of the total score/the full mark.

    Malaysian UEC

    A B4 grade or above in each subject, and an A1/A2 in at least one subject.

    Thailand’s O-NET

    A minimum total score of at least 300 points in 5 subjects.

    Indonesian NA

    An average of 6.0 points in each subject.

    Others

    International undergraduates who are currently studying or have graduated, or students who possess credentials proving an equivalent academic capability (such as uniform national or regional high school graduation examination results or university entrance examination results, etc.)

    Excellent results from high school abroad (high school diploma test scores, etc.)

    NOTE: Students who are applying from universities with which BNU has signed cooperative agreement should follow the agreement’s requirements.

    III. Application Period

    1. Online Application:

      November 30, 2020~March 15, 2021

      Deadline for online application of exemption for written test: March 1, 2021

    2. Deadline for mailing paper materials: March 20, 2021

      The deadline of March 30th, 2021 is based on the postmark of which the documents are mailed. Applicants should mail or submit the paper documents as soon as they pass the initial review.

    IV. Application Procedures

    1. Online Application:

    Register at BNU Online Application for International Undergraduate Students System (http://apply.bnu.edu.cn). After logging in, choose “Undergraduate Student” option or “Undergraduate Student Exempt from Written Test” in the column, fill in the application information and upload all application material according to the requirements of Section V. 

    2. Major Selection:

    While selecting prospective major, applicants can choose two different majors, which should be of the same discipline category. Applicants for Chinese Language major and Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages major may apply for any other majors at the same time, but must meet the requirements of relevant majors, and take all the exams of both majors. Please refer to the majors catalog of undergraduate program for international students for more information about the type of exams for each major. 

    3. Payment of Application Fee

    The application fee is 500 RMB, which is required to be paid online after submitting the application information. The application fee is not refundable once paid.

    4. Submission of Paper Application Documents:

    After the initial review, applicants may refer to Section V below to mail the paper application documents to the Admission Office of Beijing Normal University.

    V. Application Materials

    1. Beijing Normal University International Undergraduate Students Application Form. Please fill in the application form, submit online and print a hardcopy with an attached photo with white background (The photo should be the same as that of submitted in the application system). Application form without the applicant and the guarantor’s signatures will be invalid.

    2. The original or notarized certificate of high school diploma. Applicant who have graduated must provide the original or notarized certificate of high school diploma. Applicants who will graduate after the application period should provide the original copy of expected graduation certificate. Please bring the original diploma and photocopies of high school graduation certificate during registration at the university. 

    3. The original transcript of all courses in high school.

    4. Photocopies of HSK Certificate and transcript (Exam date on the HSK certificate should be no earlier than November 1, 2018).

    5. A letter of recommendation issued by a teacher, head teacher or school leader of the high school.

    6. Personal Statement Form(Please download, print and fill in the form. Personal statement should be handwritten in Chinese, print version will not be accepted).

    7. Statement of Guarantee. Please download, fill in and have the guarantor signed the form. 

    8. Copy of the first page of passport. Applicants who have been to China must provide a recent copy of the visa or residence permit page in China. Applicants who meet the requirements of Article 3 in Section II must also provide the following materials:

    (1) Copies of page with stamp of entry in the last 4 years (from April 30, 2017 to April 30, 2021), and original for reference.

      (2) Proof of study abroad in the last four years.

    (3) Applicants from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan who obtained foreign nationality after immigration must provide foreign certificate of naturalization, proof of the cancellation of original Chinese household registration and renunciation of Chinese nationality in addition to the materials for the two categories above.

    9. Applicants under the age of 18 are required to submit the original notarized certificate of guardian in China issued by the notary office of their own district in China.

    10. Photocopies of other supplementary materials and certificates. (e.g. awards or examination certificates, etc.).

    11. Candidates who apply for exemption from written examination should provide corresponding examination certificate, diploma and transcript, etc.

    ★All submitted documents should be in Chinese or English; Non-Chinese or English materials must be provided with original copies of the notarized translated version.

    ★The application is invalid if the application fee is not paid or incomplete online application materials or paper materials are submitted.

    ★All submitted materials will not be returned.

    VI. Examination Procedure

    1. Entrance examination: 

    Entrance Examination includes two parts: written exams and interviews.

    Written exams include Test of General Ability (TOGA), Essay, Mathematics or English. Literature and History majors and Art majors will take the English exam, Science and Engineering majors will take the Mathematics exam. (For more details, please refer to the majors catalog of undergraduate program for international students).

    Applicants who passed the review of exemption from written examination do not need to take written exams, they will only have to attend the interview. 

    The examination method will be determined according to the local epidemic control situation, and the specific arrangement will be informed to the applicants through the application system and email in time after confirmation.

    2. Examination date: April 10-11, 2021; Please pay attention to the notice in the application system for specific examination arrangements and requirements.  

    VII. Rules of Acceptance

    The school will choose the best candidates based on the total score of the written examination and interview. The university will inform applicants of the results of admission though the application system and email in May 2021, please pay close attention. Admission materials will be sent by post in June 2021. 

    VIII. Tuition

    1. Arts majors tuition: 12,400 RMB per semester, 24,000 RMB per academic year.

    2. Science, Engineering and Art majors tuition: 14,250 RMB per semester, 27,700 RMB per academic year.

           For scholarship application, please download and fill in “Beijing Normal University Scholarship Application Form for International Students”, upload the electronic version to the “Personal Statement” section in application system and send the hard copy of the form along with the other application materials. Applicants may pay attention to the application system and email notification for the scholarship review results.

    X. Accommodations and Visa Application

           BNU has 5 international student apartments, which provide different types of rooms including single and double rooms. Approximate fees for a room vary from 55-140 RMB per day. Relevant information can be found on the website of International Students Office: “Study&Life” – “Accommodations” at http://iso.bnu.edu.cn/cn.

           Admitted candidates should apply for an X1 visa at the Chinese embassy or consulate at their home country with the “Admission Notice” and “Foreign Student Visa Application Form” (JW201/202). Within 30 days of arrival in China, students must go to the International Students Office to apply for a residence permit. In 2021, BNU continues its admission of international students to study in China for Master or Ph.D. degree.

    I.  Schools, Departments and Majors

    BNU offers courses in a wide range of disciplines as well as numerous specialized academic Master and Ph.D. programs. The university also offers multiple English-taught master’s and doctorate programs. For more details, please refer to BNU Majors Catalog of Master’s Program for International Students and BNU Majors Catalog of Doctoral Program for International Students.

    II. Application Requirements

    1. Applicants should be in good health and of good character, respect Chinese habits and customs and be willing to abide by both Chinese Law & Regulations as well as the university's Rules & Regulations.

    2. Applicants should be non-Chinese citizens holding a foreign passport and under 50 years old (Date of Birth is before August 31, 1971). Note for Chinese Government Scholarships applicants: master's degree applicants should be under 35 years old; doctorate degree applicants should be under 40 years old.

    3. Applicants for Master’s Degrees should have a degree equivalent (or above) to a Bachelor’s degree from a Chinese university;

    Applicants for Doctoral Degrees should have a degree which is equivalent (or above) to a Master’s degree from a Chinese university.

    4. Language proficiency requirements for Chinese-taught programs:

    a) Chinese-taught Master’s programs:

               i. Chinese Language & Culture College: 220 points and above in HSK 6, 65 points and above in HSKK Advanced level;

             ii. School of Chinese Language and Literature: 210 points and above in HSK;

             iii. Other Departments: 195 points and above in HSK 5.

    b) Chinese-taught Ph.D. programs:

               i. Chinese Language & Culture College: 240 points and above in HSK 6, 65 points and above in HSKK Advanced level;

             ii. School of Chinese Language and Literature: 210 points and above in HSK;

             iii. Other Departments: 195 points and above in HSK 5.

    5. Language proficiency requirements for English-taught programs:

    Applicants from non-English speaking countries should submit proof of English language proficiency. Please refer to the specific English proficiency requirements of each major taught in English

    There is no need to submit proof of English proficiency such as IELTS or TOEFL in the following two cases:

    1) Received their last degree from English-speaking countries, and the language of instruction and assessment was in English;

    2) The last degree program was fully taught in English, and a certificate of completion issued by the university needs to be submitted.

    III. Application Period

    Online Application:

    The first period: from November 15th, 2020 to January15th, 2021

    The second period: from February 21st, 2021 to April 30th, 2021

    Applicants may choose any one of the periods to register, it is recommended to complete application a week before the deadline.

    Paper application documents should be mailed by April 30th, 2021.

    The deadline of April 30th, 2021 is based on the postmark of which the documents are mailed. Applicants should mail or submit the paper documents as soon as passing initial review. To ensure the materials are delivered on time, it is recommended to use EMS or SF express for mailing within China and to use EMS, DHL, FedEx or UPS for mailing outside China.

    Notice: For scholarship applicants, the application deadline is subject to the application date of various scholarships.

    IV.  Entrance Examinations

    Admission assessment method is application review.

    The Admission office will conduct an initial review of the applicant’s application materials according to the general rules of admission. After the applicant passes the initial review, the department will conduct an academic examination on the applicant and organize interview if necessary. The university will select the best candidates based on the initial review and academic examination results and determine the final candidates who are to be admitted.

    V. Application Documents

    Applicants should log on to http://apply.bnu.edu.cn for online application and complete the payment of the application fee. After completing online application, please mail the following documents to the Admission Office of Beijing Normal University (Room A103, Main Building).

    1. Application Form for International Students with a photograph. Please fill in the application form, submit online and print a hardcopy with an attached photo with white background (the photo should be the same as that of submitted in the application system). Please make sure that the application form is signed by the applicant and the guarantor of the applicant, the signature must be the same with that on the applicant’s passport. Application form without the applicant and the guarantor’s signatures will be invalid.

    2. Two recommendation letters by two associate professors or scholars with higher academic titles, or a senior expert in a related field. (There is no specified format for the recommendation letters, please specify the name of the referee and contact information, all letters must be signed by the referee).

    3. Personal Statement Form, please download and complete the form at the international student admission website of Beijing Normal University and sign your name in person. Your signature should be consistent with that of your passport.

    4. Transcript and Certificate of highest academic certificate

    Master’s degree applicants must provide: official transcripts, graduation certificate or degree diploma of your undergraduate program. The documents must be original or authenticated/notarized copies, either in Chinese or English (Chinese or English notarized translations are required for other languages).

    Ph.D. degree applicants must provide: official transcripts, graduation certificate or degree diploma of your master’s program. The documents must be original or authenticated/notarized copies, either in Chinese or English. (Chinese or English notarized translations are required for other languages).

    Applicants who will graduate in 2021 and is temporarily unable to submit graduation certificate and degree diploma must submit Certificate of Expected Graduation. After being admitted by the University, the original copy of the graduation certificate and degree diploma must be submitted during registration, otherwise the admission will be withdrawn.

    5. Language Test scores: For majors taught in Chinese, please provide the HSK certificate. The test time on the HSK certificate should be no earlier than November 1st, 2018. For majors taught in English, please provide English proficiency certificate required in the majors catalog.

    6. Application fee of 600 RMB. It should be paid online; cash is not accepted. (Please note: Application fee is also required for scholarship application.)

    7. The original Statement of Guarantee. Please download the form at the international student admission website of Beijing Normal University, complete it and have it signed by the guarantor. The signature should be consistent with the name of the passport.

    8. A photocopy of the first page of the applicant’s passport. If you have a visa to China, please provide a copy of the recent visa page, passport valid date must be later than March 31st, 2021. Applicants who have naturalized as foreign nationality after being former Chinese citizens should provide the documents certifying the cancellation of their original Chinese household registration and renunciation of Chinese nationality. Applicants who acquired foreign nationality at birth, if both parents or one of them is a Chinese citizen, must submit the applicant's proof of cancellation of his/her Chinese household registration and renunciation of Chinese nationality.

    9. (Optional) Academic papers, patents, or other academic achievements, CV/Resume (originals or photocopies).

    10. CSC Scholarship applicants must submit the following additional materials:

    a. CSC Scholarship Application Form;

    b. One copy of “Foreigner Physical Examination Form” (the applicant may keep the original document).

    The form is printed by Chinese quarantine authorities. Please download it at the CSC website (http://www.campuschina.org) and fill it in English. The medical examination must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. Please choose the appropriate time to take medical examination as it is valid for only 6 months.

    11. Beijing Government Scholarship, BNU New International Students Scholarship and BNU “Silk Road Muduo” Scholarship applicants should submit the Beijing Normal University Scholarship Application Form for International Students, please download the form at the international student admission website of Beijing Normal University and complete it.

    ★ Incomplete and unpaid applications will not be processed.

    The University keeps the right to require additional materials of the applicants.

    Application materials and application fee are non-refundable and will not be returned, regardless of whether the applicant is admitted by the University.

    The applicant shall guarantee that the application information and application materials provided are true and accurate. Once the admissions unit verifies that the information is not true, the applicant will be denied admission or the admission qualification will be cancelled. Those who have been enrolled will have their student status cancelled.

    VI. Study Mode, Duration and Tuition

    All students should be full-time during their study period. The study duration of Chinese-taught master’s and Ph.D. programs is three years. The study duration of Chinese-taught master’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages is two years. The study duration of English-taught master’s degree programs is two years, while the study duration of English-taught Ph.D. programs is three years.     VIII. Admission

    Admission Office of Beijing Normal University will inform applicants of admission result though the application system and email, please pay close attention. Inquiry via telephone will not be accepted. Admission Office will send Admission Notice and admission materials to admitted students. Please specify the way to collect Admission Notice and contact information during online application.

    IX. Accommodation

    1. On-campus accommodation: Beijing Normal University has 5 international student apartments, which provide single room, double room and other room types. The price ranges from 55 yuan to 140 yuan per day. Relevant information can be found on the website of the International Student Office (http://iso.bnu.edu.cn/). Applicants should log in to the online registration system to check the admission results. Admitted candidates should book the dormitory online through the personal information page of the online application system according to requirement of International Student Office. Scholarship students who have been admitted under the free accommodation policy do not need to book a dormitory, the school will arrange accommodation.

    2. Off-campus accommodation: New students who do not book the dormitory online within the given period will be seen as giving up on-campus accommodation. Please arrange off-campus accommodation in advance and go to the local public security office to register for accommodation within 24 hours of your stay, in accordance with laws and regulations. New students who live off-campus should apply for off-campus accommodation when the school starts, and sign the Off-campus Accommodation Commitment Form.

Beijing Normal University ranks among the top universities in China in terms of its comprehensive strength. It is a key university in the Chinese “Project 985” and "Project 211" and is one of the first "Double First-Class" A-class universities in China. With its rich educational resources, the university is an important base for the cultivation of high quality and innovative talents in China. In 2021, BNU continues its admission of international students to study in China for Master or Ph.D. degree.

    I.  Schools, Departments and Majors

    BNU offers courses in a wide range of disciplines as well as numerous specialized academic Master and Ph.D. programs. The university also offers multiple English-taught master’s and doctorate programs. For more details, please refer to BNU Majors Catalog of Master’s Program for International Students and BNU Majors Catalog of Doctoral Program for International Students.

    II. Application Requirements

    1. Applicants should be in good health and of good character, respect Chinese habits and customs and be willing to abide by both Chinese Law & Regulations as well as the university's Rules & Regulations.

    2. Applicants should be non-Chinese citizens holding a foreign passport and under 50 years old (Date of Birth is before August 31, 1971). Note for Chinese Government Scholarships applicants: master's degree applicants should be under 35 years old; doctorate degree applicants should be under 40 years old.

    3. Applicants for Master’s Degrees should have a degree equivalent (or above) to a Bachelor’s degree from a Chinese university;

    Applicants for Doctoral Degrees should have a degree which is equivalent (or above) to a Master’s degree from a Chinese university.

    4. Language proficiency requirements for Chinese-taught programs:

    a) Chinese-taught Master’s programs:

               i. Chinese Language & Culture College: 220 points and above in HSK 6, 65 points and above in HSKK Advanced level;

             ii. School of Chinese Language and Literature: 210 points and above in HSK;

             iii. Other Departments: 195 points and above in HSK 5.

    b) Chinese-taught Ph.D. programs:

               i. Chinese Language & Culture College: 240 points and above in HSK 6, 65 points and above in HSKK Advanced level;

             ii. School of Chinese Language and Literature: 210 points and above in HSK;

             iii. Other Departments: 195 points and above in HSK 5.

    5. Language proficiency requirements for English-taught programs:

    Applicants from non-English speaking countries should submit proof of English language proficiency. Please refer to the specific English proficiency requirements of each major taught in English

    There is no need to submit proof of English proficiency such as IELTS or TOEFL in the following two cases:

    1) Received their last degree from English-speaking countries, and the language of instruction and assessment was in English;

    2) The last degree program was fully taught in English, and a certificate of completion issued by the university needs to be submitted.

    III. Application Period

    Online Application:

    The first period: from November 15th, 2020 to January15th, 2021

    The second period: from February 21st, 2021 to April 30th, 2021

    Applicants may choose any one of the periods to register, it is recommended to complete application a week before the deadline.

    Paper application documents should be mailed by April 30th, 2021.

    The deadline of April 30th, 2021 is based on the postmark of which the documents are mailed. Applicants should mail or submit the paper documents as soon as passing initial review. To ensure the materials are delivered on time, it is recommended to use EMS or SF express for mailing within China and to use EMS, DHL, FedEx or UPS for mailing outside China.

    Notice: For scholarship applicants, the application deadline is subject to the application date of various scholarships.

    IV.  Entrance Examinations

    Admission assessment method is application review.

    The Admission office will conduct an initial review of the applicant’s application materials according to the general rules of admission. After the applicant passes the initial review, the department will conduct an academic examination on the applicant and organize interview if necessary. The university will select the best candidates based on the initial review and academic examination results and determine the final candidates who are to be admitted.

    V. Application Documents

    Applicants should log on to http://apply.bnu.edu.cn for online application and complete the payment of the application fee. After completing online application, please mail the following documents to the Admission Office of Beijing Normal University (Room A103, Main Building).


    1. Application Form for International Students with a photograph. Please fill in the application form, submit online and print a hardcopy with an attached photo with white background (the photo should be the same as that of submitted in the application system). Please make sure that the application form is signed by the applicant and the guarantor of the applicant, the signature must be the same with that on the applicant’s passport. Application form without the applicant and the guarantor’s signatures will be invalid.

    2. Two recommendation letters by two associate professors or scholars with higher academic titles, or a senior expert in a related field. (There is no specified format for the recommendation letters, please specify the name of the referee and contact information, all letters must be signed by the referee).

    3. Personal Statement Form, please download and complete the form at the international student admission website of Beijing Normal University and sign your name in person. Your signature should be consistent with that of your passport.

    4. Transcript and Certificate of highest academic certificate

    Master’s degree applicants must provide: official transcripts, graduation certificate or degree diploma of your undergraduate program. The documents must be original or authenticated/notarized copies, either in Chinese or English (Chinese or English notarized translations are required for other languages).

    Ph.D. degree applicants must provide: official transcripts, graduation certificate or degree diploma of your master’s program. The documents must be original or authenticated/notarized copies, either in Chinese or English. (Chinese or English notarized translations are required for other languages).

    Applicants who will graduate in 2021 and is temporarily unable to submit graduation certificate and degree diploma must submit Certificate of Expected Graduation. After being admitted by the University, the original copy of the graduation certificate and degree diploma must be submitted during registration, otherwise the admission will be withdrawn.

    5. Language Test scores: For majors taught in Chinese, please provide the HSK certificate. The test time on the HSK certificate should be no earlier than November 1st, 2018. For majors taught in English, please provide English proficiency certificate required in the majors catalog.

    6. Application fee of 600 RMB. It should be paid online; cash is not accepted. (Please note: Application fee is also required for scholarship application.)

    7. The original Statement of Guarantee. Please download the form at the international student admission website of Beijing Normal University, complete it and have it signed by the guarantor. The signature should be consistent with the name of the passport.

    8. A photocopy of the first page of the applicant’s passport. If you have a visa to China, please provide a copy of the recent visa page, passport valid date must be later than March 31st, 2021. Applicants who have naturalized as foreign nationality after being former Chinese citizens should provide the documents certifying the cancellation of their original Chinese household registration and renunciation of Chinese nationality. Applicants who acquired foreign nationality at birth, if both parents or one of them is a Chinese citizen, must submit the applicant's proof of cancellation of his/her Chinese household registration and renunciation of Chinese nationality.

    9. (Optional) Academic papers, patents, or other academic achievements, CV/Resume (originals or photocopies).

    10. CSC Scholarship applicants must submit the following additional materials:

    a. CSC Scholarship Application Form;

    b. One copy of “Foreigner Physical Examination Form” (the applicant may keep the original document).

    The form is printed by Chinese quarantine authorities. Please download it at the CSC website (http://www.campuschina.org) and fill it in English. The medical examination must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. Please choose the appropriate time to take medical examination as it is valid for only 6 months.

    11. Beijing Government Scholarship, BNU New International Students Scholarship and BNU “Silk Road Muduo” Scholarship applicants should submit the Beijing Normal University Scholarship Application Form for International Students, please download the form at the international student admission website of Beijing Normal University and complete it.

    ★ Incomplete and unpaid applications will not be processed.

     The University keeps the right to require additional materials of the applicants.

     Application materials and application fee are non-refundable and will not be returned, regardless of whether the applicant is admitted by the University.

     The applicant shall guarantee that the application information and application materials provided are true and accurate. Once the admissions unit verifies that the information is not true, the applicant will be denied admission or the admission qualification will be cancelled. Those who have been enrolled will have their student status cancelled.

    VI. Study Mode, Duration and Tuition

    All students should be full-time during their study period. The study duration of Chinese-taught master’s and Ph.D. programs is three years. The study duration of Chinese-taught master’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages is two years. The study duration of English-taught master’s degree programs is two years, while the study duration of English-taught Ph.D. programs is three years.     IX. Accommodation

    1. On-campus accommodation: Beijing Normal University has 5 international student apartments, which provide single room, double room and other room types. The price ranges from 55 yuan to 140 yuan per day. Relevant information can be found on the website of the International Student Office (http://iso.bnu.edu.cn/). Applicants should log in to the online registration system to check the admission results. Admitted candidates should book the dormitory online through the personal information page of the online application system according to requirement of International Student Office. Scholarship students who have been admitted under the free accommodation policy do not need to book a dormitory, the school will arrange accommodation.

    2. Off-campus accommodation: New students who do not book the dormitory online within the given period will be seen as giving up on-campus accommodation. Please arrange off-campus accommodation in advance and go to the local public security office to register for accommodation within 24 hours of your stay, in accordance with laws and regulations. New students who live off-campus should apply for off-campus accommodation when the school starts, and sign the Off-campus Accommodation Commitment Form.

Different Levels of Classes & Small Class Teaching

BNU welcome the students from all over the world. Different levels of teaching is our feature. We have nine different levels of classes for students to choose, ranging from beginners’ to advanced, Students will take 20 hours Chinese class each week. Students are placed in appropriate class after a placement test upon registration. Small-class teaching is our tradition. 15-20 students class gives every student more opportunity to speak. We emphasize on students’ performance in the class and changing teacher-center class to students class thoroughly.


Strong and Committed Teachers & Full Range of Curriculum

Highly experienced and fully professional teachers make students improve their communicative ability by practicing in listening, speaking, reading and writing, and engage students in practical student-centered activity. Full range of courses are provided for students, such as Chinese history, Chinese literature, Chinese geography and so on. We also offer rich elective courses to students which can stimulate students’ interests and make students have a better understanding of Chinese and Chinese culture, courses such as calligraphy, Kung-fu, Chinese ancient poetry and so on.


Edutainment & Extracurricular Activity

We offer richly colorful extracurricular activities, such as Beijing Opera appreciation, Chinese language competition, culture tour and so on, which is an appropriate method for students to put their knowledge into practice.

2. Pay application fee of 450 RMB online. 

3. Please prepare documents as directed in [Application Materials] and mail them to the BNU Admission Office.

4. Check the application status online in the application system regularly. 

5. Admitted students can reserve dormitory online when you receive the online admission letter. For detail information please see Accommodation as following.

6. Students admitted to BNU may apply for your visa at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in your country with your letter of admission and JW202 form.

7. Register in the date which is written on your admission letter.

8. Pay your tuition fee (by using Union Pay card) and accommodation fee (paying by cash) after you arrive the university.

Student will receive a BNU student ID card upon registration, which can be used as a meal card and shopping in campus’ supermarket.


Visa Application

Students admitted to BNU may apply for your visa (X1/X2) at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in your country with your letter of admission and JW202 form. International students who will study in China for over 6 months are required to obtain ‘X1’ Visa, which will only be valid for 30 days after your arrival in China. You must come to the International Students’ Office and apply for a Residence Permit within these 30 days in order to obtain a legal status in China.

When register, the applicants who are holding the visa of other Chinese University need to provide the Transfer Agreement or Certificate of completion of your study or the Study Certificate.

    1. Background

    The 2019 Summer Training Program for The Belt & Road organized by Smart Learning Institute of Beijing Normal University (SLIBNU), focuses on nurturing high-end talent and developing relevant disciplines for The Belt & Road countries. SLIBNU is a comprehensive experimental platform involving scientific research, technology development and instructional teaching, which was jointly established by Beijing Normal University and a global educational technology company, Elernity.

    2. Purposes

    Supported by Beijing Government, the program aims at attracting an increasing number of high-level talents to learn and exchange ideas, as well as train in China.

    -- Helping talents from various countries have a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the Chinese culture.

    Introduction to the program

    The annual Summer Short-Term Chinese Language Program of BNU is opening now! Hierarchical teaching and teaching in small classes are the characteristics of our program. Highly experienced and fully professional teachers of the College of Chinese Language and Culture (CCLC) of BNU will help the students in the short-term program rapidly improve their communicative capability. The program applies a student-centered methodology which combines teaching and practising as well as entertaining that can increase the interests of learning Chinese as well as communicative capability.


    I. Highlights

    v  Rich and colorful extra-curriculum activities.


    II. Duration of the program

    Class A: July 1st – July 19th (Three weeks)

    Class B: July 1st – July 26th (Four weeks)

    Class C: July 1st – August 16th (Seven weeks)

    Class D: July 1st – August 23rd (Eight weeks)

    Class E: July 29th – August 16th (Three weeks)

    Class F: July 29th – August 23rd (Four weeks)


    There are several programs you can choose according to your own schedule: from three to eight weeks’ programs start either in July or August.


    III. Course Introduction           


    A. Class placement

    The Summer Program mainly offers language lessons for three levels’ language learners: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Each level may be further divided according to specific conditions of the learners, for instance, the beginner level may be further divided into Absolute Beginner, Intermediate Beginner, Advanced Beginner, and so forth. Class divisions shall be done according to the results of the placement test. Each class consists of approximately 15 students and beginner class less than 5 shall be closed.


    B. Class Arrangements

    Course content: Each level has Reading & Writing and Listening & Speaking courses, as well as Chinese culture courses, twice a week, include Experiencing Chinese Culture (involving calligraphy, Chinese painting, Chinese music, paper cutting, and so on) and Chinese Kung-Fu.

    Course schedule & objectives: Each class hour, we will learn one lesson and students in beginner, intermediate and advanced level will learn around 10, 20 and 30 words. After this program, normally they can pass HSK1, HSK3 and HSK4 respectively. Some students in advanced level could pass HSK5.

    E. Assignments and Grading


    1. Each teacher will assign written or oral homework, in-class dictation, in-class quizzes, etc. according to their class requirements. Scores on these assignments make up the Assignments grade.


    2. Grading structure: Attendance 10% + Participation 20% + Assignments 70%. Our grading system is based on percentage points, which can be converted into another grading system according to the special requirements of the students’ home universities.

    Extracurricular Chinese Culture Courses

    2. Introduction


    Beijing Normal University (BNU) enjoys over a 100-year history. As a key university under the immediate administration of the Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China, it is renowned for teacher education, education science and liberal arts and sciences. Education ranks within 10 in the same filed globally.

    Faculty of Education at Beijing Normal University successfully held the FELP(2018) last year and won acclaim all over the world. This year, we will host the Beijing FELP(2019) in July, and 37 excellent undergraduates and graduates from outstanding universities at the B&R countries will be selected to enjoy an opportunity to study at Beijing Normal University for 14 days.

    Topics around Chinese culture and education will be discussed over the courses in English. Specifically, four modules are listed in the table below. The credits for the courses are distributed as course study, dialogue and discussion, and visiting and practice. A course certificate will be awarded for learners after the program.

    Program Description

    The world is facing serious challenges such as global change and lack of resources. Resources is increasingly demand by global population growth and economic development, while human activities is strongly influencing the changes of the Earth's ecological environment. How to understand the evolution of the ecological environment under the influence of human activities and then effectively manage resources and environment is of great significance to the regional sustainable development in the context of globalization.


    This program is specifically designed to help the students

    1.       Understand the relationship between resources and environmental management and regional sustainable development,

    2.       Discuss on strategic problems related on human activity, resource development, economic development, future earth, ecological and environmental change, as well regional sustainable development,

    3.       Follow professional tutors for field trips and internships,

    4.       Experience the social and cultural development under the construction of China's ecological civilization.

    from four independent but interconnected parts,

    1.       Academic courses (cover a wide range of fields on geography, ecology, environment, culture, economy, science, technology and so on, and is optional for participants) (8 weeks),

    2.       Field trips (2 weeks),

    3.       Research seminars (2 weeks, and accompany with the academic courses) and,

    4.       Cultural excursion (1 week)

    Welcomes Application



    BACKGROUND


    Intensive loss and complex destruction caused by emergencies such as disasters, conflicts, public health crisis have affected the well-being and safety of persons, communities and countries. Many of the crisis are increasing in frequency and intensity, “significantly impede progress towards sustainable development” (UNISDR, 2015).

    For decades, the humanitarian and development nexus has been a crucial issue across sectors and varied in terminology, policy, implementation, and research levels. Stakeholders are extensively involved in this constant dialogue, including governments, the United Nations, international and national non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.

    The School of Social Development and Public Policy, the Innovation Center for Risk Governance (ICRG) in Beijing Normal University (BNU) with support from partners including UNDP, WHO, Harvard University, proposes to develop the China Humanitarian and Sustainable Development Initiative (HDI), which aims to contribute for enhancing youth’s knowledge, capacity and entrepreneurship in participating in the global humanitarian and development sectors.


    ACTIVITY


    In 2019, HDI welcomes application from university students (undergraduate and graduate), young scholars and practitioners to become HDI Fellows. The Fellows will then participate in three phases of capacity building:

    1. Face-to-face Classroom learning (June). A two-week summer academy in Beijing (June 9-23) provides HDI Fellows with intensive learning activities including lectures, case studies, symposiums, field visits, simulation and team-learning.

    2. Community-based project planning (July-September). HDI Fellows are expected to transform their knowledge and skills into a community-based humanitarian/development project plan and submit the plan online.

    3. Internship (since October). 5-10 Outstanding HDI Fellows will be recommended to access to short-term secondment/internship in international humanitarian and development partner organizations, including UN agencies and INGOs. During the secondment/internship (three to six months), HDI Fellows are also expected to accomplish an independent research on relevant topics.

    Through a highly collaborative, practice-oriented learning process, the HDI Fellows will be expected to increase capacity with mastery of skills in leadership, management, communication and entrepreneurship relevant to the global humanitarian and sustainable development sectors.


    TARGET GROUP

     

    The HDI anticipates 20-30 international and Chinese university students, young scholars and practitioners in humanitarian and development sectors with global vision and social entrepreneurship as HDI Fellows in 2019.

    - Good English communication and writing skills required;

    - Record in relevant courses or training, experience in community service or international volunteering an asset;

    - Students with recommendation from University Social Responsibility Network (USRN) members in priority.

    Applicants are required to submit their curriculum vitae, personal statement in a 5-min video, and one recommendation letter via email (see contact below) before April 20. Application result will be communicated by the end of April.


    SUMMER ACADEMY

     

    The 20-30 HDI Fellows are expected to complete prep reading in May, and take a two-week course in summer academy based in Beijing Normal University from June 9 to 23. They have the chance to listen to and dialogue with professors and experts from Program on Crisis Leadership at Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, World Health Organization, the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Overseas Development Institute, and Chinese scholars and non-governmental organization partners.

    The Fellows are encouraged to learn interactively in four modules: Humanitarian Contexts and Challenges; Sustainable Development; Methodology and Cross-cutting Issues; Activities and Practice.

    HDI supports the Fellows with adequate allowance to cover their travel and accommodation fee.
